Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys, the musical, is a winner – no really, winner of Best New Musical at the Olivier and Whatsonstage.com awards 2009.

It is based on the thrilling real life story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons – Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Tommy De Vito. The musical follows the lives of a group of working class boys, who may have started life out wrong, but eventually make huge accomplishments for themselves by becoming a brilliant success in the pop music industry. They do so by writing their own songs, which sell 175 million records the world over, that too all before they reach the age of thirty!

The four main characters are played by Ryan Molloy, Stephen Ashfield, Philip Bulcock and Glenn Carter and it is directed by Des McAnuff.

The soundtrack for Jersey Boys features a few bands of international standing, some of the hits including Beggin’, Walk Like a Man, Sherry, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You and Big Girls Don’t Cry, to name a few.

The music is said to compliment the scenes rather than distract from them, and the scenes are narrated by different members of the four-seasons, which is refreshing and useful for those with a narrower attention-span among us, as there is no risk of the one narrator throughout getting too monotonous for one’s liking. The impact is very multi-dimensional, and the essence of an actual story is easily conveyed to the audience without the need for music to be the foundation of the entire production. Also, with the show gradually building up with its fast moving scenes and reaching its peak of performance towards the end, the last memory you will have in the theatre is of yourself getting on your feet and dancing away.

Bookings are available till 27 March 2010, so there is plenty of time to plan your visit, and perhaps a re-visit if you love it enough (which is highly likely, mind!). All shows are staged in the Price Edward Theatre, Old Compton Street, London, easily accessible by road, bus or the underground.
