The Lord of the Rings –
The Lord of the Rings finished its production run in July
2008, after presenting the classic storyline to over 700,000
people, those in the UK and visitors from abroad. A brilliant
success at the Theatre Drury Lane in London, the show took
its audience to the enchanted world of Middle-earth. The
production cost came up to 25million rendering the musical
to be one of the most expensive to be staged in London’s West End, with AR Rahman (of Bombay Dreams fame) taking care of the music side of things, and Matthew Warchus taking on the role of Director.
Some of the leading actors include Malcolm Storry as Gandalf, Michael Therriault as Gollum, James Loye as Frodo, and Jerome Pradon as Aragorn.
As the title suggests, it is an adaptation of JRR Tolkein’s well worshipped trilogy, “The Fellowship of the Ring”, “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King”. The combination of exhilarating choreography, stage design and over 70 actors, singers and performers brings the trilogy to life in the way most expected it would be. The ideas of hope, discovery, devotion and friendship are entwined beautifully into a three hour long performance.
The soundtrack for the musical is epic in its own way, complimenting the dark theme, as seen with ‘The Road Goes On’, ‘The Song of Hope’, ‘Lament for Moria’ and ‘Flight to the Ford’ being
a few popular ones, often appreciated for the haunting yet energetic nature,
allowing for a musical interpretation for the scenes on show.
A German speaking production of the same musical is expected to be staged in
Cologne in November 2009, and there are also plans for to create a touring version
of the show for 2010, which should be flexible but unique enough to maintain
its London Production touch.
